Positive effects of moderate consumption of red wine on blood vessels and circulation has what, Gunk explains gynecologist Dr. Bernd Kleine-in his book Resveratrol - longer young with the red wine-Medicine.
Presented in a range of studies (see below refs): mice that were fed resveratrol as a supplement to their traditional diet. It was observed the mice stayed much healthier during their lifespan. Even in older mice; heart, muscles, eyes and bone structure appeared healther compared to the control group.
Resveratrol appears to mimic the effects of a starvation diet, such as the Okinawa diet, without its potential drawbacks, such as constant freezing, sexual pain, and extreme deprivation
David Sinclair of Harvard University, says: "For the first time we can bring the benefits of calorie restriction in a healthy animal." Sinclair has long been a supporter of the benefits of resveratrol and its associated enzyme, SIRT1.
Calorie restrictive diet also activates this enzyme, SIRt1 in the family Surtuine that regulate cell function and control the regeneration of cell power plants (mitochondria).
Conflicting Analysis
First, this analysis was performed only on mice and the effects on the human organism are not yet clear.
Second, Sinclair is not only a scientists but also the former owner of a pharmaceutical company that produces and distributes resveratrol and other anti-aging products. This suggests a possible conflict of interest regarding published research findings.
Despite claims about how compound, resveratol, stimulates the body's production of antioxidants to counter the effects free radicals, the body of research is not conclusive at this time. And further research is required.
The ambiguiety of the resveratrol research does not seem to hamper the development of commercial products containing resveratrol. For example, Glaxo Smith Kline sees opportunity for resveratrol in the markets of anti-aging and body weight loss / management.
In short, there appears to be enough evidence to indicate a relationship between resveratrol and health benefit claims, however a miricle drug is it not. But rather a supplement to a well balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Resveratrol Improves Mitochondrial Function and Protects against Metabolic Disease by Activating SIRT1 and PGC-1
Specific SIRT1 Activation Mimics Low Energy Levels and Protects against Diet-Induced Metabolic Disorders by Enhancing Fat Oxidation
